Slope D Body. Long Scale Power. Raucous Sound.

Placing you squarely at the front of the mix.

The name Banjo Killer was coined by Bryan Sutton for his six-stringed onstage sidekick, back in the day when he burst onto the bluegrass scene in the late 1990s. Featuring a double scalloped X brace design, stiffer back bracing and a 25.5” scale, the Banjo Killer’s bark is as terrifying as its bite. Bearclaw Sitka Spruce, figured Mahogany and our distinctive “snakehead” headstock round out an otherwise understated aesthetic presentation.

BOLT-ON NECK DESIGN

Designed by Dana. Proven by Time.

In the early 1970s, Dana Bourgeois set out to solve a centuries-old challenge in acoustic guitar design: how to maintain precise neck angle and long-term serviceability without compromising tone. The result was his proprietary detachable neck joint, a revolutionary system that became a hallmark of Bourgeois guitars.
Unlike traditional dovetail joints, Dana’s design allows for accurate, repeatable neck angle adjustments without steaming, cutting, or guesswork. Today, after nearly 50 years of refinement, this system continues to define every Bourgeois instrument, including the Professional Series. Paired with a graphite-reinforced, double action truss rod, it ensures unmatched stability, precision playability, and effortless maintenance.

The Bourgeois Difference

PREMIUM AGED TONEWOODS

At the heart of the M5 lies a hand-carved, torrefied Aged Tone Adirondack spruce top that delivers the warm, mature sound typically found only in vintage instruments. The torrefaction process ages the wood naturally, creating an instrument that sounds like it’s been played for decades from day one. Complementing this exceptional soundboard are torrefied European maple back, sides, and neck that provide brilliant projection and sustain while adding visual elegance with their striking figured grain patterns.

VINTAGE AESTHETIC, MODERN PERFORMANCE

The Sunburst finish evokes the golden age of American mandolin craftsmanship, offering players a connection to iconic music traditions while delivering the reliability and playability expected from a modern instrument. Unlike most modern sunbursts created with sprayed finishes, Bourgeois mandolins use traditional hand-applied, waterbased stains that blend directly into the wood. This method enhances the natural “chatoyance”—a shimmering reflectivity of figured maple and carved tops—causing colors to shift and dance under changing light. This finish beautifully highlights the natural beauty of the figured maple, creating an instrument that’s as visually stunning as it is sonically impressive.
