Panama Rosewood, nicknamed ‘Panama Red’ by Dana Bourgeois, holds all the tonal magic of dense Rosewoods while remaining relatively light in weight. This yields a desirable stiffness to weight ratio, translating into exceptional resonance and projection. The D Panama Red 10047 includes our full suite of Aged Tone options. This includes an AT Adirondack top, AT Adirondack bracing, AP glue, and AT Finish. Built with similar appointments to our Vintage/HS, the Panama Red kicks things up a notch with killer exotic tonewoods and our complete set of “vintage tone enhancing” upgrades.

Over the last eighty years, the Dreadnought became firmly established as the world’s most popular acoustic guitar. It’s easy to see why. Its deep body, wide upper and lower bouts, and large air cavity combine to set the standard for exceptional projection and low end presence.
Decades ago Dana noticed that during the first few years of a large guitar’s life, guitar tops “relax” until stretched to their limit. Later in the guitars life, the top will “harden” as a result of permanent distortion. During relaxation, bass is boosted and high frequency response dies off. This often is beyond desirable limits and balance is not restored for years. In the 1990’s, Dana modified the traditional Dreadnought bracing system. Bourgeois began scalloping only the bass side of the X brace and lightening it’s tone bars. The result successfully counteracted a Dreadnought’s tendency to “unbalance”, and over the years has attracted scores of Dreadnought players. Among the ranks are Bryan Sutton, Josh Williams, Andy Falco, Courtney Hartman and many others.
